The Ohana Campfire

In 2012 I happened to attend a conference for my partners business as a plus 1, normally I would just carrying the bags, drink the free coffee, play on my phone and generally be ‘the help’ when and if required. However, it was during this particular conference that a keynote was delivered by Orville Thompson, the CEO of Scentsy and it has always resonated with me since that day of an approach to growing a business and treating everyone as an equal rather than trying to keep success to yourself.

Orville’s Code of the Campfire reminds me of how I have found the Salesforce Ohana and how the Salesforce Community shares their knowledge and assists in helping others through their own problems and issues.

Orville Thompson’s Code of the Campfire

1. All must continue to feed the fire if you want it to grow.

2. Please sit in an equal circle around the fire so all can enjoy its warmth.

3. As the fire burns high and hot, all must move back to allow more to join our circle.

4. Believe in the abundance of wood and don’t be spooked by the fluctuation of flames.

5. Don’t move ahead to collect more warmth at the expense of those behind you.

The Code of the Campfire is about helping others and sharing knowledge and successes and if we want our business/industry to grow we need to all commit to it and help it grow. It tells us to ‘step back’ and invite others in to share in our success. That there is enough room for everyone to be successful, everyone to be happy and with the Salesforce eco-system constantly growing, the Code of the Campfire tells us that we should embrace this growth and share this with as many people as possible and not keep all the knowledge and success to ourselves.

For me this doesn’t just apply to Scentsy and their consultants as a business, but to any industry and I feel that for myself, being relatively still new to the world of Salesforce, the attitude and commitment to helping others already exists with the Salesforce Ohana, which makes me even more thankful for being part of the Salesforce eco-system and I hope it forever continues.

The story of Scentsy is one that I admire about perseverance. I have attended many Scentsy conferences and get so much inspiration from the keynote speeches. I thoroughly enjoy attending them and always feel extremely motivated afterwards.

Who are Scentsy?

In 2004, $700,000 in debt and determined to avoid bankruptcy, the Orville and Heidi Thompson decided to “swing for the fences” to get out of debt while focusing on adding value to others’ lives. Months later, they purchased Scentsy from two young women in Utah.

What began as a small family business, run from a shipping container on a sheep farm, has grown into an international fragrance company and direct sales leader.

After almost a decade of renting space for the growing company, Scentsy officially moved into its 73-acre campus, Scentsy Commons, which officially became Scentsy’s home in 2013. Heidi and Orville carefully designed the campus to be a warm, inviting, state-of-the-art space for their employees, Consultants and the local community.

The campus is full of friendship, family and fragrance. It is always buzzing with activity: tours, bridge clubs, community events and celebrations. In many ways, it is a fulfilment of the promises made in the company’s mission statement.

But Scentsy’s mission can never really be fulfilled. Heidi and Orville continue to “swing for the fences,” always looking for new ways to provide an industry-leading, family-friendly business opportunity throughout the world, with a focus on the company’s values of Simplicity, Authenticity and Generosity.

The Scentsy Mission

To bring value to the world by providing an industry-leading, family-friendly business opportunity selling creative, artistic, high-quality products that Warm the Heart, Enliven the Senses and Inspire the Soul.
