Certified Scrum Master and Scrum

Overview

The Certified Scrum Master credential is designed for those who have experience as a Scrum Master or are looking to start a career as a Scrum Master. Candidates will gain a broad knowledge of the Scrum Agile Framework, the Scrum Masters role and the roles and responsibilities of the other members of the Scrum Team. You will also learn about the Scrum events, artefacts and rules of Scrum.

About the Certified Scrum Master Course/exam

You have many options from attending a two-day Certified Scrum Master course that will be taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer where you’ll get a comprehensive overview of how to organise and support a Scrum Team. You will also have an exam to pass after the course. Or you can choose to self learn and take just the exam ( there is plenty of material out there to do it this way it all depends on budget and what kind of learner you are, I personally find courses alot easier for me to learn in). Once you pass the CSM exam, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of certification.

Scrum overview

Scrum is not a methodology but a framework to work within, People/Businesses use this to address complex adaptive problems, while productively delivering product increments on a regular basis.

Scrum is:

  • A Lightweight framework, you can add things to this framework, but you must NEVER take anything out.
  • Simple to understand but you must remember this is not a replacement for Waterfall this is a totally different approach aside from waterfall.
  • Difficult to Master especially in big teams that have always used the long standing waterfall approach and are unwilling to adapt alot of the process they currently have to a more flexible way of working.

Scrum is a process framework that has been used to manage work on complex products since the early 1990s. Scrum is not a process, technique, or definitive method. Rather, it is a framework within which you can employ various processes and techniques. Scrum makes clear the relative efficacy of your product management and work techniques so that you can continuously improve the product, the team, and the working environment.

Scrums key Values

  1. Commitment.
  2. Courage
  3. Focus
  4. Openness
  5. Respect

When these key Values are embodied and lived by the Scrum Team, the Scrum pillars of transparency, inspection, and adaptation come to life and build trust for everyone. The Scrum Team members learn and explore those values as they work with the Scrum events, roles and artifacts.

To be a Successful Scrum Team

For Scrum to be Successful it is all dependent on how well people in the Scrum Team adapt to this framework and they live and breath Scrums five key values.

People will personally commit to achieving the goal the Scrum Team set. The Scrum Team members will show courage towards doing the right thing and work on resolving tough problems they come across. Everyone focuses on the work of the Sprint and the sprint goal. The Scrum Team and its stakeholders have an open mindset and share all the work and the challenges they may come across. Scrum Team members respect each other and always believe the other members of the team put there best into the work they are doing.

Members of the Scrum Team

The Scrum Team consists of the Product Owner, the Development Team, and a Scrum Master.

The Scrum Team is a self organising team that choose the best way to accomplish the work they have agreed to be complete within that sprint goal they are not directed by others outside the team. Scrum is designed to optimise flexibility, creativity, and productivity.

Scrum Teams deliver products iteratively and incrementally, opening up opportunities for feedback. Each Sprint delivers a business usable product increment.
